Beaumont Primary School

P4C

Intent:

Through the study of Philosophy for Children (P4C), pupils at Beaumont Primary School will develop the knowledge and understanding to express their thoughts, feelings and beliefs and explore the true meaning of our core values, as well as current topical issues that they find interesting to discuss and are passionate about. By the time children leave Beaumont, they will be able to engage in critical conversations; work collaboratively and think creatively in order to deepen their knowledge and understanding in all subjects. P4C provides a firm reference point from which to become a global citizen. A citizenship founded on our school values: To be Kind, Polite and Hardworking. These values are integral to the wider work done in school and facilitate the development of our pupils as confident and respectful global citizens.

Implementation:

P4C is a philosophical approach to learning and teaching that enables pupils to think with others and to think for themselves. Our Philosophy for Children (P4C) curriculum aims to introduce learners to different ways to enquire about the world and enables us to provide a safe space to explore the true meaning of our core values and the big ideas that arise in all areas of education and life experience. P4C uses philosophical dialogue and enquiry to help learners to think, to speak, to listen, to learn and to live together more effectively. P4C sessions begin with a starter to get everyone thinking, such as a story, picture or video clip. From this stimulus, children may then move on to create questions together in small groups depending on their age. They then share these questions & vote on which one they wish to further explore & discuss as a class.

P4C focuses on four main thinking skills:

  • Caring – understanding others and being respectful of different opinions
  • Collaborative – finding solutions together
  • Creative – making connections and thinking of new ideas
  • Critical – understanding what we think and why Skills are taught progressively across year groups leading to knowledge building over time.

At all times opportunities to develop vocabulary and oral expression and speech and language are promoted. Expected outcomes are provided for all staff.

Impact:

The impact of learning is measured through the use of class discussions and observations which demonstrate what has been understood. Formative assessment and reflection activities demonstrate the progression of knowledge, skills and understanding. Where learning is not secure, additional learning takes place to address this. By the time our children leave Beaumont, they will have been immersed in P4C for 8 years allowing their knowledge and skill set to communicate effectively using spoken language to grow and develop. P4C is a valuable way in which learners can envisage and create, a better future.
